Hagia Sophia

Built in 306AD, the Hagia Sophia served as a Orthodox Church until Constantinople`s conquest in 1453. It was considered to be the largest cathedral ever built, until the construction of the Seville Cathedral in Spain in 1520. In 1453, it was converted into a mosque until 1931, where is was closed by the new Republic of Turkey for a period of four years. After which, it was reopened as a museum to the public. Today, four minarets, a minbar, and a mihrab are all featured in Hagia Sophia - the additions made to it to convert it to a mosque. Read more ...
